Hiram Halle was a visionary, inventor, successful businessman, art collector, home restorer and philanthropist. Born in Cleveland, Ohio he moved to Pound Ridge in 1929, believing it to be “a fine country place . . . to enjoy in my retirement.” However, soon he was making his mark on our town. In the depths of the depression, Halle purchased many derelict old houses and put over 60 local men to work on their restoration. Today those homes, buildings and stone walls still beautify and benefit Pound Ridge, as do his contributions to the Pound Ridge community – The Fire Department, Pound Ridge Elementary School, the Pound Ridge Library and “forever wild” lands such as the Halle Ravine. It is hard to imagine what Pound Ridge would have been without his contributions.
